The Levi Heinold/Mountain Power Scholarship

Scott Ely and Sunsense Solar created this scholarship to honor Levi Heinold by empowering aspiring solar professionals to complete SEI’s entry-level solar training and certification.

From Scott Ely:

One of my best friends and long-time solar buddy, Levi Heinold, passed away in late February of 2018.  As I continue to wrestle with this reality, I got to thinking about what he represented to anyone and everyone in his orbit.

I first met Levi at a Solar Technology Institute PV class in Carbondale, Colorado in 1992 (the forerunner of SEI).  Richard and Karen Perez from Home Power were the guest instructors and I was there in a support role as the local solar business owner.  We hit it off immediately (with some assistance from a 12-pack)!

Our friendship only blossomed from there.  As budding solar businessmen, we collaborated on projects and over the next 25 years, we worked extremely hard and shared countless experiences and stories.  We climbed peaks, we camped, we played in the snow and we partied.  I have always, and will always, considered him my brother.

Levi had a work ethic like no other.  In his earlier days he hiked both the Pacific Coast Trail and the Appalachian Trail (twice!).  He built a reputation around a quality business without the use of a website, logos on vehicles…heck, I’m not sure he even had business cards!  Everyone wanted Levi on the job because they could count on personalized service and a job well done.

Most of all, Levi built things and he fixed things.  My standard description of Levi always included…”nothing scares him.”  He was a Master Plumber, NABCEP Certified in PV and DHW, a self-taught mechanic and a problem solver.  Levi was practical, but never shied away from a challenge.  He was a risk-taker, yet laid-back as well.  In short, one of the most solid people I have ever known.

It is with this in mind that I wanted to pay tribute to those that build.  The awards, recognition and yes, the money, generally stay upstream.  But it is literally the people in the trenches that make this whole solar thing work.

So God speed, Levi.  You brought so much love, joy, laughter and passion to this world.  I am a better person having known you and will forever work as hard as I can to continue your vision of a caring people and a sustainable planet.

To those interested in hard work without the hoopla, but with a passion for PV and getting the job done, I offer this scholarship opportunity.  And to those successful in this endeavor, potential employment awaits at Sunsense Solar!

Join us in honoring Levi by making a gift in his honor today. Visit:  https://www.solarenergy.org/scholarship-funds/

Select “donate now” which will redirect you to our donation page. Write in “Levi Heinold/Mountain Power Scholarship” under Your own cause.  Together, we are envisioning a world powered by renewable energy. Rest easy, Levi.

SEI’s letter to Colorado Governor Jared Polis: Ambitious renewable energy goals? We can help!

Colorado Governor Jared Polis was sworn into office in January touting the nation’s most ambitious renewable energy goal, 100% renewable energy by 2040. This goal surpasses the notably progressive states of Hawaii and California, which have historically paved the way to RE-friendly policies, with both pledging to make the switch by 2045.

Solar Energy International (SEI)’s industry-leading solar technical training center has been located in Western Colorado for nearly 30 years. Since our inception we have trained nearly 70,000 alumni worldwide, playing a pivotal role in the foundation of the beckoning renewable energy workforce in the United States, and in our home-state of Colorado.

We are supportive of the Governor’s renewable energy goals, and we are excited to continue in our role of preparing the future workforce that is increasingly needed as we move forward into a world powered by renewable energy. Check out our letter to Governor Jared Polis in support of this exciting undertaking.

SEI’s Letter to Colorado Governor Jared Polis

To the Honorable Governor Jared Polis;

Solar Energy International writes to congratulate Governor Polis on his election and commend his commitment to addressing climate change. With our vision of a world powered by renewable energy driving us, we will use our expertise to help the Governor achieve the policies and market solutions necessary to make his 2040 vision for 100% renewable energy generation a just and inclusive reality.

Solar Energy International (SEI) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that has pioneered renewable energy education and technical training from our home base on the Western Slope in Paonia, Colorado. Since our founding in 1991, we have educated over 65,000 individuals from Colorado and around the world in renewable energy technologies including solar PV, solar thermal, and micro-hydro systems via both hands-on technical trainings and online courses. In total, our alumni have gone on to help design, install, and maintain over 4,500 megawatts of renewable energy capacity around the globe.

We are dedicated to accelerating our efforts in a fashion commensurate to the climate crisis, with a goal of doubling our impact over the next three years. This means we aim to train over 110,000 individuals by 2022. Alongside adding capacity, SEI is constantly updating our training to reflect the rapidly changing technological innovation occurring throughout our industry, including in energy storage, operations and maintenance for utility-scale projects, and interconnections with the grid. We strive to provide industry-leading training in solar,  not only train people new to the workforce, but also upskill the existing solar workforce. We were recently awarded a second grant from OSHA to develop PV safety training. As the preeminent solar training organization in Colorado, SEI is uniquely positioned to develop the skilled workforce necessary to scale the green energy economy and install renewable generation across the state.

While SEI has a strong international presence with campuses in Costa Rica and Oman and with alumni from 145 countries, we remain focused on ensuring Colorado retains and increases its status as a clean energy leader and innovator. According to a 2018 report from the Natural Resources Defense, Colorado ranked 6th in the nation for total clean energy jobs with 7,918 of the total 57,591 being solar jobs. Data from the Solar Energy Industries Association shows that Colorado ranks 12th in the country in terms of solar energy capacity, with 1,086.55 megawatts installed as of Q3 2018. While these rankings are laudable, Colorado’s population and vastly untapped solar resources mean there is ample potential to improve these numbers. SEI strongly encourages Governor Polis to use the resources of his office to promote clean energy generation and support workforce development programs targeted around solar, wind, and energy efficiency, among other technologies.

A recent example that could serve as a template for these goals and underlines SEI’s capabilities is the Solar Ready Colorado program.  In 2016, SEI partnered with a consortium of organizations including COSEIA, GRID Alternatives, and Colorado solar companies to apply for a grant under the Work Act administered by the Colorado Department of Labor. The result of the grant was Solar Ready Colorado, a program aimed at increasing access to quality training for all Coloradans interested in joining the green energy economy. These efforts resulted in 411 Coloradans trained in solar energy technologies. Total demand for participating in Solar Ready Colorado, however, vastly exceeded the program’s capacity with over 1,000 individuals registering interest. Additional feedback collected from Solar Ready Colorado and supplemental data indicate that financial cost remains a key barrier to more Coloradans seeking to retrain or enter the solar energy workforce. We urge Governor Polis to look at ways to increase the affordability and access to quality technical trainings for all of our state’s residents.

As an organization based on the Western Slope, we are keenly aware of the specific energy challenges facing rural Colorado communities. Coal-mining had been the largest source of jobs and economic development in our home of Delta County, but market forces have led to mine closures and thousands of lost jobs in recent years. SEI responded to the mine closures by launching the Economic Revitalization through Solar Program in 2015. This program included launching a group-purchase solar growth program and advocating Delta County to adopt Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (CPACE). These efforts resulted in the successful passage of C-PACE, more than  450 kW of newly installed solar, over $1.5 million dollars in local solar energy investment, and the direct creation of at least 10 new solar jobs. Delta County was designated as a SolSmart Gold community in the Fall of 2018 by the U.S. Department of Energy, making it the second smallest county in the country to receive this prestigious recognition. Delta County also installed the first agricultural CPACE project in the state.

SEI is now sharing these successes and lessons learned with other former coal-mining and rural Colorado communities via the new Solar Forward program. Launched in January of 2018, Solar Forward is helping communities kickstart their own local solar markets by pairing them with an SEI technical advisor and equipping them with a solar “toolbox” of tried and tested solutions to make it easier for homes and businesses to go solar. Solar Forward has thus far partnered with community non-profits, local solar installers, public officials, and graduate students at Western Colorado University to accelerate solar energy adoption across Gunnison County. A solar group-purchase program will officially commence in Gunnison on January 31, 2019, and the Solar Forward team is now working with Montrose, and Summit Counties to implement similar programs. SEI commends Governor Polis’s dedication to increasing economic opportunity for all Coloradans and recommends the Governor prioritize programs that ensure rural communities will be included in the financial, environmental, and health benefits realized through a clean energy economy.

The majority of SEI’s students have been adults, but we are increasingly focused on empowering our youth with the tools necessary to stay competitive in the 21st century economy and find fulfilling careers that address climate change. Since 2001, our Solar In Schools program has run workshops for over 900 K-12 students on the principles of energy efficiency, energy conservation, and the basics of solar photovoltaics. We are now taking our youth educational programs to the next level with our Solar High School Technical Training and Careers Program.

Since the program’s launch in 2015, we have partnered with two high schools to train over 70 high school students. We are now expanding the program to an additional four high schools and expect the number of students trained to more than double by the end of 2019. These students visit our world-class training center in Paonia, receive teaching from SEI professional instructors, and are eligible to receive the same industry-recognized Record of Completion as adults. We are working with Delta County School District to formalize the offering as a Career and Technical Education program recognized under the Colorado Department of Education. Additionally, we have formed an unprecedented partnership with our local utility, DMEA, to finance the installation of four, 10-20 kW solar PV systems with real-time energy monitoring at participating local high schools. We are in discussion with several other utilities to create similar programs across the state. SEI hopes that Governor Polis will examine strategies to further integrate solar energy onto school facilities and into school curriculums across Colorado.

SEI is enthusiastic about Governor Polis’s renewable energy agenda and is at the ready to help in its implementation. By focusing on statewide workforce development, increasing renewable energy access in rural communities, and integrating solar energy education into Colorado schools, SEI sees several key paths to partnership.

We are a resource for the Governor; please join us in our efforts and work with us to build the clean energy workforce and realize our shared vision of a Colorado powered by renewable energy. To further discuss how we can work together, please call us anytime at 970-527-7657 ext. 207 or email at kswartz@solarenergy.org.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Swartz, Executive Director

Solar Forward: Gunnison ‘Solarize’ launch garners community support and media recognition

What can bring an entire community together on a dark winter night in sub-zero degree temperatures? A favorite local brewery and the power of solar energy!

Last week, the Solarize Gunnison County Team kicked off their Solarize program with a launch event for the community at High Alpine Brewing Co. in Gunnison, Colorado. The event, hosted by Solar Forward partners and Solarize Program Coordinators Hunter Edberg and Ellen Ross, was packed with interested solar customers. The Team, along with selected partner solar installers, Nunatek Alternative Energy Solutions, gave a presentation to attendees on how to register and participate in the program.

Solarize banner art provided by Solar Forward

The Solarize Gunnison County program aims to kickstart a solar market in the community by offering a streamlined process to go solar, and by educating community members on the benefits of residential solar during a 13-week outreach period. The Solarize Gunnison program coordinators have partnered with local solar installers, Nunatek, who are offering an exclusive discount on solar systems for people who register to Solarize during the outreach period.

Other benefits of the program to community participants include a no-cost, no-commitment site assessment on their property, as well as access to resources on financing solar systems. However, positive implications of kickstarting a solar market will persist beyond this 13-week period, as similar initiatives have shown that a solar market creates jobs and economic resiliency in communities.

The program was featured in Crested Butte News.

“Imagine a world that ran on clean, renewable energy. What would it look like, and what does it take to get there? Ellen Ross and Hunter Edberg, candidates in the Master in Environmental Management Program at Western Colorado University, seek to answer these questions in their 13-week outreach campaign called Solarize Gunnison County.”

Check out the full article here.

The Solarize Gunnison County program was made possible through technical consulting from Solar Energy International’s Solar Forward program. The program, which launched in 2017, aims to use increasingly more affordable solar technology to strengthen the economies, resilience, and independence of Colorado communities in rural areas. Through the program, community groups or non-profits can apply to receive SEI technical advising on solar-related initiatives for a full year, in addition to a ‘toolkit’ compiled by industry experts tailored to community’s needs. These initiatives include ‘Solarize’ outreach programs, and SEI’s Solar in Schools, high school technical career pathway program.

More information on the program launch can be found on the Solar Forward webpage, and featured in ‘SEI launches solar advising program for rural Colorado communities’ in Solar Power World.

The technical ‘toolkit’ for a Solarize program includes everything from a personalized logo to outreach and marketing material templates, press release templates, event planning and lead management guides, informational presentations for the community and more. Technical consulting also includes a basic webpage setup for the Solarize program.

Solar Forward is accepting community applications on a rolling basis, and the application is available on the Solar Forward webpage.

Solarize Gunnison County saw nearly 40 program registrations following their launch event.

Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association (COSEIA) releases ‘7 Principles on How To Get To 100% Clean Energy by 2040’: Solar Forward can help

This week, the Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association (COSEIA), released a new report titled “7 Principles on How To Get To 100% Clean Energy by 2040.”

According to their blog post announcing the report, “Colorado is in the middle of a dynamic evolution in the generation and delivery of electricity because customers are demanding choices and direct participation in how energy is generated and managed.” That fact, coupled with some of the major milestones to hit the energy market in the past month poise the state to potentially lead the way to an innovative clean energy transition.

Some highlights from last month include a groundbreaking announcement of the state’s largest utility moving to zero carbon emissions by 2050 followed by a municipal utility making a similar pledge, and finally a rural electric cooperative in the West (Delta Montrose Electric Association) asking state regulators to weigh in on a fair exit fee from their coal-heavy electricity supplier. However, this report in particular falls in line with new governor-elect Jared Polis’ 100% clean energy by 2040 goal.

Is your County or community interested in leading the way to the renewable energy shift, or have you already pledged to go 100% renewable by a certain date, and need some technical expertise to draft your action plan? Solar Energy International’s Solar Forward program offers technical consulting and tools to help your community kickstart, or support an existing solar market.

COSEIA recommends prioritizing the following actions to achieve a 100% renewable energy goal by 2040:

1) Use all proven clean energy technologies

2) Support customer choice to access products and services

3) Level playing field for all participants

4) Share benefits of solar and storage across Colorado

5) Identify grid services provided by solar and storage and compensation mechanisms

6) Adjust rate designs to better align cost and value of services

7) Build a network for the future

More than Energy Savings: Why Your School Should Go Solar

Written by Stefan Johnson, SEI AmeriCorps VISTA

In Western Colorado, where Solar Energy International (SEI) is headquartered, we’ve been applying our industry-leading technical training to the education of the next generation. Most of the 65,000 individuals who have received our training have been adults,  but we’re increasing our impact with younger demographics by partnering with high schools.

SEI launched the High School Solar Career and Technical Pathway program in Delta County during a period of economic distress following the closure of two local coal-mines. Since the program’s launch in 2015, we’ve given hands-on education and training to over 90 students at two high schools. The high school offering is based off of PV101: Solar Training – Solar Electric Design and Installation (Grid-Direct), SEI’s most popular course for individuals looking to enter the solar energy field. Students who complete the course are eligible to receive the same industry-recognized Record of Completion as adults. Many of these high school students have gone on to study STEM in higher education or pursue jobs and internships in the solar and electric trades. At Paonia High School, students even had the opportunity to help install a 10 kW system at their school in the May of 2018.

Now, thanks to an innovative partnership with our local utility, Delta Montrose Electric Association (DMEA), we have big goals for expanding the program in 2019. DMEA is using their unclaimed capital credits to finance the installation of nearly 50 kWs of solar spread across five high schools to take place this coming spring. After learning about solar PV systems via SEI’s curriculum, students will once again be encouraged to apply their knowledge and participate in the installations of the systems.

Around the country, more and more schools are installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on their campuses and rooftops. According to a recent report, there were 5,489 K-12 schools that had gone solar in the United States at the end of 2017, and that number has surely grown as we enter 2019. It wasn’t so long ago that one frequently heard complaints about the cost of environmentalism, but now, thanks to economies of scale and technology improvements, schools going solar are actually SAVING money. Beyond the pure financial and environmental benefits, however, there are many other advantages for schools to go solar. Solar PV systems can offer teachers and students an invaluable educational tool and hands-on resource for learning about math, physics, engineering, technology, and environmental sciences.

The Brighter Future; A Study on Solar in U.S. Schools report was jointly published by the Solar Energy Industries Association, The Solar Foundation, and Generation 180  in November, 2017 and found that the number of schools going solar was increasingly rapidly. According to the report, the total energy capacity for solar on K-12 schools nearly doubled from 490 Megawatts (MWs) in 2014 to 980 MWs in 2017.  That is now is enough to to power more than 190,000 homes! The total number of schools with solar increased from 3,752 in 2014 to nearly 5,500 in 2017.

Savings are one strong incentive for schools to add solar to their buildings and campuses. The falling cost of solar PV means that going solar is increasingly viable from a financial perspective, and schools can now even see big on their energy bills. In the sunny Southwest, two high schools in Rio Rancho, NM realized over $700,000 in savings since they installed solar in 2013. Solar is even penciling out in colder, cloudier states; a 2017 project in New York is expected to save Warwick School District $250,000 annually, while another school in Illinois is expected to save more than $10 million over the lifetime of their solar project. These energy savings translate to a big environmental impact. The Brighter Future report estimated solar schools are offsetting one million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, or the equivalent emissions of over 200,000 cars! Regardless of the region, solar has the potential bring significant economic and environmental benefits to schools and their students

Schools are also increasingly taking advantage of the unique educational opportunity offered by onsite PV systems. Integrating solar energy into educational curriculum can help students develop valuable skills whether they pursue higher education or look to immediately enter the workforce. In a world that is increasingly automated and globally competitive, the solar industry is one of the most robust and fastest growing in the nation. There are already over 250,000 solar jobs in the country, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics projects Solar photovoltaic installer as the fastest growing occupation from 2016 through 2026.

All across the United States, schools are getting creative with how they add solar energy onto their building and into their classrooms. In Bozeman, Montana, Claire Vases used her independent study project to advocate for solar and spearheaded a campaign that raised over $100,000 to fund solar at Sacajawea Middle School. At Antelope Valley Union School District in California, students’ performance in science and math improved dramatically after incorporating real-time energy data and solar energy concepts from the school’s PV system into their lesson plans.

Congratulations from SEI: Solar Access Team wins first place for innovative community solar business model

Solar Energy International wants to acknowledge and congratulate the Access Solar team for taking first place in the business model pitch competition, and second place in the business plan presentation competition, that represented the culmination of their work in Colorado State University’s Global Social and Sustainable Enterprise (GSSE) MBA program. The team is made up of four incredibly talented and driven women: Addison Arnold, Luciana Figliolo, Melody Redburn, and Aurora Sepp-Peterson. SEI was fortunate to be chosen by the team in April to act as an advisor in their development of a business model that aims to connect community solar project developers to customers.

As part of the research and development phase, SEI gave the GSSE team a scholarship to take the online PV101 class, and SEI hosted the students when they visited the Paonia campus in July for a week of in-person collaboration. SEI AmeriCorps VISTA Shane Sobotka led the team during the week of research, brainstorming, and meetings. The team visited the CSU Agricultural Research Station in Hotchkiss to discuss a potential utility-scale solar project with the station’s directors, met with board members and executives of Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) and other local utilities at DMEA’s Annual Meeting, toured a local development using the latest in sustainable building technology (including a 40kW community solar carport array), discussed used and recycled solar module markets with an SEI engineering partner, and learned about the future of community energy markets and blockchain with Nest Labs/Google and Drift Marketplace. The team even joined Paonia’s local ultimate frisbee group for a pickup game during their visit.

The team’s final business model focused on identifying, qualifying, and bringing together individuals that want access to solar power but are locked out of the current market because they don’t own their roofs. Access Solar bundles these customers as counterparties to power purchase agreements with solar project developers in compatible energy markets. All four women plan to continue working in the solar industry, and Solar Energy International is grateful for such educated allies in our mission to create a world powered by renewable energy, and it seems that the CSU judges agree!

A letter of gratitude and warm wishes for the holiday season from SEI Executive Director Kathy Swartz

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Happy Solstice!

Winter has officially arrived in Colorado. While there are just a few patches of snow throughout our PV training campus in Paonia, the mountains are already deep in snow. There’s a cautious optimism that the snowpack will continue throughout the winter, which in spring and summer, provides water for drinking, irrigation for local farms, and outdoor adventures.

We often get asked the question, “So what do you do in the winter? Does SEI just shut down?” December is our busiest planning month of the year. As an organization, we just finalized our Strategic Plan and our 2019 budget, to be approved by our Board of Directors in January. Our Curriculum team is busy developing new training, including the next iteration of PV-specific OSHA training; new multimode and microgrid curriculum; and translating our PV202: Advanced PV System Design and the NEC into Spanish! Our Program Hispano and Middle East and Africa teams are busily mapping out the many trainings we’ll be offering in these regions. Our Student Services and Marketing teams are brainstorming new ways to improve the student experience.  Our Development team just wrapped up the annual end-of-year appeal. (Check your mailboxes!)

I’m so incredibly grateful for our board, staff, and instructors (we now number about 100!) who have made 2018 so successful. We’ve exceeded over 65,000 alumni who have taken training with us! We opened two international campuses (Oman and Costa Rica) to expand access to our training, launched the first PV-specific OSHA training (delivered for free to over 3000 of you), are helping to spread solar throughout rural Colorado through Solar Forward, launched a $2million capital campaign, and ensured that no person who wanted training was denied.

SEI’s success is a symptom of a much greater movement that’s happening across the world, and what is happening in Colorado demonstrates this.  Colorado has been the epicenter of a pivotal shift in the energy industry. From a groundbreaking announcement of the state’s largest utility moving to zero carbon emissions by 2050 followed by a municipal utility making a similar pledge, to a rural electric cooperative in the West asking state regulators to weigh in on a fair exit fee from their coal-heavy electricity supplier, the powerful moves made this week toward a future powered by renewable energy have the potential to reverberate impact across the country and the world.

SEI’s vision is complexly simple. We envision a world powered by renewable energy. As an organization we realize that it doesn’t matter to us why people come to us for training. Whether it’s a career change, to start a business, to combat global warming, to be self-reliant or to be on the cusp of a new technology. Renewable energy is neither Republican or Democrat or Tea Party or Green Party, though it may be played as such. For us, the ultimate end goal is a world powered by renewable energy.

And to reach this vision, SEI’s mission is to provide industry-leading technical training in renewable energy to empower people, communities and businesses worldwide. To reach our vision, we have to have systems that are properly sold, designed, installed, and maintained to avoid repeating the lessons of previous decades. In this rapidly evolving industry, it’s our mission to provide people with the training that they need, no matter what size or type of system they specialize in. This training, as our alumni know first-hand, is empowering. Whether you become a more knowledgeable homeowner or start a new career, develop or grow a business, or work with a community in the developing world- SEI’s training is designed to serve you.

As this year quickly comes to a close, on behalf of all of us at Solar Energy International, we wish you a Happy 2019. May your year be sunny, your systems trouble-free, and your work fulfilling. Thank you for being an alumni and friend of SEI.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Swartz

Executive Director

Colorado: The epicenter of a pivotal renewable energy shift

Colorado has been the epicenter of a pivotal shift in the energy industry this past week. From a groundbreaking announcement of the state’s largest utility moving to zero carbon emissions by 2050 followed by a municipal utility making a similar pledge, to a rural electric cooperative in the West asking state regulators to weigh in on a fair exit fee from their coal-heavy electricity supplier, the powerful moves made this week toward a future powered by renewable energy have the potential to reverberate impact across the country.

Last week, Delta Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) filed with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) “to exercise its statutory authority over Tri-State Generation & Transmission as a public utility and adjudicate a just, reasonable and nondiscriminatory exit charge.” Tri-State, which primarily supplies electricity from fossil fuels, limits all of its members to 5% renewable energy, while at the same time their electricity costs have increased by 56% since 2005.

If the PUC rules in DMEA’s favor, it could potentially cause an exodus of other electric co-ops to follow in DMEA’s footsteps, or force Tri-State to significantly raise the cap on renewables. Either way, this is a win for renewables.

We can look across the country to Georgia for an example of why this decision could be so impactful. Just last week, a partnership opportunity model emerged between consumer-owned coops and corporate renewable energy procurers when Georgia’s Walton Electric Membership Corporation revealed contract details for three solar projects that will supply a Facebook data center in the state. The projects will add up to 202.5 megawatts in total capacity.

In this case, Facebook chose a coop over a larger investor-owned utility (IOU).  A Facebook spokesman told Greentech Media the move was in part due to a commitment “to the communities that host us, and part of that is working to bring additional investment to these communities, including new renewable energy resources.”

The news in Colorado and Georgia jointly reveals that renewable energy is emerging as primarily an issue of economic development as opposed to simply combating climate change. As an industry-leading training organization, SEI recognizes the potential of job opportunities created by projects such as these, and we are so excited for the increased support and access to renewable energy.

There’s a movement happening and it’s swelling from the ground level. DMEA is making this move because we, their members, voted in favor of them moving forward with a new vision, and their Board, which is composed of everyday citizens from Delta and Montrose Counties, is bold enough to see this fight through until the end.

We are excited for this win-win scenario for renewable energy, and are looking forward to powering forward into the future as a leading training provider in solar energy, empowering the growing workforce as the industry continues to thrive.

Alumni Highlight: SEI Alum Edwin Bifelt founds solar company, celebrates major installation and local job creation

Solar energy training can have a life-changing impact on your career path. Solar Energy International (SEI) Alum Edwin Bifelt first took SEI training online in November of 2017. Not even a full year later, he founded a solar company and just celebrated completing the first phase of a 120 kW solar PV ground mount array project on October 26th in Hughes, Alaska.

Edwin explained that his journey with solar began one night in September 2017. He thought, “Wouldn’t it be awesome to get into solar?” And a late night of researching solar and photovoltaics training led him to SEI’s online campus, and the plethora of training opportunities we offer from grid-tied basics, to battery-based design, installation and maintenance.

Edwin formed Alaska Native Renewable Industries, LLC (ANR INDUSTRIES) in December 2017 and the company is now a licensed General Contractor focusing on LED lighting retrofits, solar PV and construction. “Through the certificate programs I was able to progress from a novice level to close to a professional level in under a year,” Edwin explained.

Edwin, who lives and works in rural Alaska, explained that being able to take SEI classes online was total game-changer for job training. “For me taking the majority of my classes online was my only option. So it was great that SEI classes are primarily online and at your own pace. The classes were very informative and thorough – which is necessary because solar PV is such a technical field.”

ANR Industries is now excited to announce the completion of phase one of the Hughs, Alaska Install. According to Edwin, the massive project involved driving 180 helical piles to a depth of 8 feet (much of it through frozen permafrost), installing 6 rows of metal racking with total lengths of 100+ feet each and installing 360 solar panels (60 per row). The project is one of the largest solar PV installations in Alaska – and may be the largest installed in rural Alaska to-date. Funding for the project came from the U.S. Department of Energy with matching funding from the Hughes Village Council.

The project also utilized 91% of locally hired team members. Although the system will not be commissioned until summer 2019 (when Lithium-ion batteries, inverters, utility interconnections and fencing will be installed) – this is a huge step forward in reducing diesel fuel usage at the Hughes Power Plant and ultimately reducing electricity costs for the entire community.

Edwin’s story is an inspiration: from deciding to pursue solar training, to leading one of the largest installations in rural Alaska to-date. SEI training can be the first step in your life-changing journey. Check out SEI’s Solar Professional Certificate Program to learn about the industry’s most rigorous training path into the solar industry.

SEI’s next online class session starts on January 14. Enroll today!
